Bentley and St. Anselm have always been decent teams in the NE-10 but they needed something to push them over the top. Enter coaches sls6398 for Bentley and BroncoRon for St. A’s. Both ended the year on a 2 game winning streak and were quite impressive and in particular the Bentley secondary and St. A’s running game.
Bentley graduated alot of seniors from their 12-3 playoff team last year and to many a 5-8 season would be disappointing. Bentley though finished third in the NE-10 East and played the 34th toughest schedule in Division 2. They had some bright spots and will return some key players on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Louis Boyle was a magnificent game manager and threw 14 touchdowns to no interceptions. The team still has things to figure out at runningback but they have no seniors at the position and had a great freshman class that will develop on offense. Defensively Rodney Armstrong will be back after a 9 sack season as will 3 of their 5 secondary starters in Luis Jones, Raymond Nelson, and Jim Leonard. They will miss one of the leagues best defensive players in DB John Johnson though.
St. A’s finished 8-5 and 3rd place in the NE-10 West behind a strong running attack. Claude Smith led the way with 1,628 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. His best game of the year came against Stonehill and he went for 3 touchdowns, over 200 yards, and broke 2 runs over 20 yards. He is very explosive and will be back next season as a senior leader. Quarterback Thomas Edwards will be moving on after starting 2 years at quarterback for the team compiling 29 passing touchdowns and 3 rushing. The team also returns 3 offensive lineman on that bruising run blocking line. Defensively Steven Gross dominated in the secondary and his protege Thomas Robertson is only a junior next year. The team also hits hard forcing 14 fumbles on the year.
Both of these guys were new to their teams and took over well and we look forward to seeing them in the future.
